Based on Xiamen dialect, Southern Fujian Chinese is used in south of Fujian Province, most areas of Taiwan and few parts of south Zhejiang. The Min dialects of Hainan Island (hereafter HM) provide us with invaluable hints to these questions. HM is regarded as a special variety of the Southern Min (hereafter SM). Historical documents reveal that the ancestors of its speakers came from Quanzhou 泉州,Zhangzhou 潭州,Putian 莆田 of southern Fujian, Chaozhou There are five linguistic, or dialect, regions in the state, and our corner is called the Southern Appalachian Highlands Dialect. The others, moving east, are the NC + VA Piedmont Dialects, the NC Coastal Plains Dialect, and the Pamlico Sound Dialect – which refers to the easternmost part of the state, including the Outer Banks. After discussing the shift in the Min dialects, this paper seeks to differentiate the diachronic strata of “被” in the southern Min dialect. I contend that (1) p?ua3 is only preserved in “被病”, and could be traced back to the archaic stratum; (2) p?e7 means quilt, and belongs to the Jin northern stratum; (3) pi7 is a marker of passive sentence, and belongs to the Tang-Song stratum. Taiwanese Hokkien, which is commonly known as Taiwanese or Tâi-gí, is one of the Southern Min dialects.
